Charity - Thungelimpilo

In a small town called Ingwavuma, in one of the most rural of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, about 40 Zulu women produce colourful embroidery work under the name Thungelimpilo. In Zulu Thungelimpilo means to embroider life or to embroider for life! The initiative is run by Nancy Matema and Denise Momberg. This supported community of women who sadly have had a difficult past and are still facing significant challenges, but through their work for Thungelimpilo (which began 5 years ago), the community are flourishing and empowered.

These incredible artists embroider pictures from everyday life, Zulu culture, fauna and flora with each piece being very individual, in design, scale and format creating a real and authentic African work of art. Taking inspiration from their surroundings in this rural town, these artist operate from, show the challenges of their lives. With just 2% of the town’s occupants having running water the basic needs we abroad accept as standard is different in the far north of the Kwazulu-Natal province in South Africa. Very close to the border of Eswatini and Mozambique, north of the great Jozini dam, these embroidery pictures, embroidery art, are crafted in vivid colors with the finest craftsmanship. Life, as perceived by the artists, is embroidered without a template, in free expression. Small works of art from this sunny region of Africa. in the absolute finest craftsmanship, the splendor of color and the expression of the proud Zulu culture. Celebrate this life with us!
